Consider the nitration of benzene using mixed conc. H SO and HNO . If a large amount of KHSO4is added to the mixture, the rate of nitration will be (NEET 2016)

A.faster
B.slower✓ Correct
C.unchanged
D.doubled
Explanation

Nitration reaction is generally used to introduce the nitro group to the aromatic ring. In the case of nitration reaction, Sulphuric acid helps in the formation of electrophile 2 NO but if 4 KHSO is added in excess it will decrease the concentration of electrophile 2 NO which will, in turn, decrease the rate of reaction. Hence, the reaction will become slower. Hence, the correct option is (b).
