Which of the following compounds will not exhibit cis-trans isomerism ? (PMET 2006) (a) (b) (c) (d)

Answer
B
Explanation

Geometrical isomerism is exhibited by the compound which possesses the double bond. It is also called cis-trans isomers E-Z isomers. The geometric isomers mainly arise from double bonds and ring structures. In C-C single bond, the rotation is free whereas the in double bond, the rotation is restricted about the double bond. For a compound to show geometrical isomerism, it should have two different substituents attached to each side of double bond like (A)(B)C=C(A)(B) However, in option (b), one carbon has same substituent so it will not show GI. Thus, the correct option is (b) GENERAL ORGANIC
