Pollutants which are formed by reaction amongst the primary pollutants (persist in the environment in the form they are passed into it) are called as secondary pollutants, e.g. peroxy acetyl nitrates (PAN) are formed through the reaction between nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons in the presence of sunlight.
