Antidote for carbon monoxide is/are (CG PMT, Haryana PMT 2009)

A.carborundum
B.dry ice
C.carbonic acid
D.pure oxygen and carbogen✓ Correct
Explanation

Carbon monoxide binds tightly to haemoglobin. It lowers oxygen saturation of blood and also causes haemoglobin to bind more tightly to oxygen. Therefore, carbon poisoning basically blocks oxygen transport to tissues. The antidote for carbon monoxide poisoning involves having the patient breathe 100% oxygen or carbon with 95% O2, 5% CO2. So, more oxygen will be available to displace the carbon monoxide from haemoglobin. Hence, both carbogen and pure O2 act as an antidote for carbon monoxide. ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY 22
