In a set of reactions, ethyl benzene yielded at product D. ‘D’ would be (RPMT 2011) (a) (b) (c) (d) Ans. (a) Sol. In presence of alkaline potassium permanganate, ethylbenzene undergoes oxidation and leads to the formation of benzoic acid i.e. B in the reaction sequence. When benzoic acid reacts with bromine and ferric chloride, it undergoes halogenation reaction and the halogen group i.e. bromide is added at the meta position due to the presence of a ring deactivating group i.e. –COOH. Meta bromo benzoic acid reacts with ethyl alcohol in acidic medium and undergoes ester formation forming metabromo ethyl benzoate i.e. D in the reaction sequence.
