Assertion (A): The boiling points of alkyl halides decreases in the order RI > RBr > RCl > RF Reason (R): The boiling points of alkyl chlorides, bromides and iodides are considerably higher than that of the hydrocarbon of comparable molecular mass. (AIIMS 2018)

A.If both assertion and reason are correct and the✓ Correct
B.If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is
C.If the assertion is true but the reason is false.
D.If the reason is true but the assertion is false.
Explanation

Assertion and reason both are correct statements but reason is not the correct explanation of assertion. For the same hydrocarbon part, boiling point depends upon the atomic mass of halogen atom. Higher the mass of the halogen atom, higher will be the boiling point. So, boiling point decreases with decrease in atomic mass of halogen atom. Thus, the decreasing order of boiling point is, RI > RBr > RCl > RF 43. Correct order for reaction with alcoholic KOH.
