Aldehydes are the first oxidation product of primary alcohols. The primary alcohols are first oxidized to form aldehydes which on further oxidations can be converted into carboxylic acid. Ketones are formed from oxidation of secondary alcohols and this cannot be further oxidized to form carboxylic acids.
