Assertion : Al(OH)₃ is amphoteric in nature. Reason : Al—O and O—H bonds can be broken with equal ease in Al (OH)₃.

A.A
B.B
C.C✓ Correct
D.D
Explanation

In the case of Aluminum hydroxide the hydroxyl groups form a double-layer structure, where the aluminum ions are in 2 3 rd of the octahedral voids of the double layer. The aluminum hydroxide reacts with hydrochloric acid as well as sodium hydroxide solution to produce 4 Al(OH) - and 3 AlCl respectively. The reactions are shown below, 3 3 2 Al(OH) 3HCl AlCl 3H O(l) + ® + 3 4 Al(OH) OH (aq) Al(OH) (aq) - - + ® But the Al—O, and O—H bonds cannot be broken with equal ease.
