Nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide have some properties in common. Which property is shown by one of these compounds, but not by the other? (CBSE AIPMT 2015)

A.Forms acid-rain
B.Is a reducing agent
C.Is soluble in water
D.Is used as a food-preservative✓ Correct
Explanation

Nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxidd froms acid rain. ‘Acid rain’ is the rain water containing sulphuric acid and nitric acid. (a) 3NO₂ + H₂O → 2HNO₃ + NO 2SO₂ + 2H₂O + O₂ → 2H₂SO₄ 27 P-BLOCK ELEMENTS (GROUP 15-18) (b) NO₂ and SO₂ acts as a good reducing agents e.g. SO₂ reduces halogens to halogen acid. Cl₂ + 2H₂O + SO₂ → 2HCl + H₂SO₄ (c) NO₂ and SO₂ both are soluble in water. (d) SO₂ is used in the manufacture of sodium bisulphite (NaHSO₃) which is used as a preservative for jams, jellies sand squashes. But NO₂ is not used as preservative.
